Color-change wrap or PPF on a Tesla Model Y?

A wrap changes the color; paint protection film keeps the paint perfect; color-change film does both in one layer. Many Model Y owners wrap for the look and film the front end. Here is how to choose, with the Teslas we've done.

A Tesla usually arrives with one of two questions: the owner wants a different look, or wants to keep the factory paint perfect — often both. Vinyl and film go on the same panels but do different jobs, so the right answer depends on which problem you are solving.

A wrap changes the color

A wrap changes the color and finish without touching the factory paint, in finishes paint can't offer: satin, matte, colour-shift. It is reversible, so the car can go back to factory for a lease return or resale.

Most of the Teslas in our archive are wraps: a Model Y in 3M Dead Matte Black, another in 3M Satin Battleship Gray, a Model 3 Performance in 3M Matte Military Green and a Model X in 3M Satin Black.

Film keeps the paint perfect

Paint protection film is a thick, optically clear urethane layer that absorbs the stone chips and scratches that would otherwise reach the finish, and its top coat self-heals light swirls with heat from the sun or warm water. Most builds start at the front end — bumper, hood, fenders, mirrors — where the highway hits first, and scale up to full-body coverage.

We install film from XPEL, STEK, SunTek, 3M and Avery Dennison. The Model X in the archive below is a film job.

Color-change film: both in one layer

Colour-change paint protection film is a new finish on the surface with the factory paint preserved underneath, and the chip protection of film. It is the choice when you want a new color and real protection in a single layer.

Doing both

Many owners wrap for the look and film the impact zones. The high-impact areas of a wrapped front end can be filmed, and matte-safe films add protection without changing a satin finish's character.

Living with it

Hand wash or use a touchless wash, and keep pressure-washer jets off edges and seams. A ceramic coating over the wrap or film makes washing easier — water and grime sheet off — but it doesn't stop chips; that is what film is for.

How to choose

If the problem is stone chips on a car you want to keep perfect, start with front-end film. If the goal is a new look, wrap it, and film the front end if the car does highway miles. If you want both in one layer, ask about colour-change film. Configure it in the Build Studio for an estimated range; final pricing is confirmed after we see the car.
